Bosch CS5 Left-Blade Review
One of the most noticeable features of the Bosch CS5, is the left-side blade location. This makes it much easier to see what you’re doing for right handed use. While the Bosch CS5 is advertised as being a lightweight circular saw, it really depends on what you compare it to. Most other options in the same price range use a 12 amp motor, while the Bosch CS5 uses a 15 amp motor (which also means a bigger base plate). The bigger motor adds to the weight, but also increases the power significantly. That bigger 15 amp motor packs a serious punch. Since most of the similarly priced saws uses a smaller, and therefore lighter motor, the Bosch CS5 weighs a bit more than most. However, compared to other 15 amp circular saws (which generally cost much more), the CS5 is on the lighter side of things. Since the motor reaches 6,200 rpm, it is important to use high quality blades with the CS5.
The Bosch CS5 is pretty typical as far as features go. The blade is secured with a standard arbor, requiring a tool to change blades. An anti-rotation feature locks the spindle in place making blade tightening and changing much easier. While there is no safety lock on the trigger, the grip on the handle is divided, thus separating the trigger from the rest of the handle.
The only potential downsides of the Bosch CS5 circular saw, is the minor kick-back when turned on, and the amount of time it takes for the blade to stop spinning once turned off. While these may take a bit of getting used to, they are to be expected with high-power motor, and the added strength of versatility far outweighs the kick back and spin-down time.
Bosch CS5 Review Conclusion
While the Bosch CS5 is not covered in trendy add-ons such as laser-guides, they focused on what really matters: building a well designed, durable tool that will last through years of wear and tear. All in all, the Bosch CS5 is a powerful saw with the standard features you expect from a circular saw in this class, with the addition of a left-side blade location. Considering the quality, durability, usefulness and price of the Bosch CS5, I think it’s a worthy addition to any tool collection.
